On October 11, 2002, a blanket of fog descended rapidly upon motorists on Interstate Highway I-43 near Cedar Grove, Wisconsin, creating a sudden and dramatic change in driving conditions that led to the most devastating traffic accident in Wisconsin history. The multi-vehicle accident caused more than forty serious injuries and claimed the lives of David S. (Hans) Arendt, Daniel J. Balint, William T. Balint, Eric J. Behling, Nadine M. Boltz, Richard Benjamin Doll, Allen Domke, Daniel J. Janquart, Rachel Matt, and Kenneth Rauwerdink. Just three miles away in the same dense fog, within minutes of the accident on Interstate Highway I-43, a second traffic accident claimed the life of Mallory Rinn. Hundreds of motorists, many of whom were injured, along with emergency personnel and everyday heroes, helped at the accident scene and provided comfort to those in need.
