On the afternoon of May 19, 1863, this redan, the line immediately to its right, and part of the stockade to its left were held against Union assaults by the 36th Mississippi, supported on its east face by the 5th Missouri, while the 1st and 4th Missouri (Consolidated) held its north face and part of the stockade line, and the 3rd Missouri remained in reserve. Casualties in the 36th Mississippi could not be accurately stated; in Cockrell's Brigade, 8 were killed and 62 wounded, for a total of 70, nearly all in this position. The position was again held on May 22, and Union assaults were repulsed by the 36th Mississippi and six companies of the 1st and 4th Missouri on the east face, and by the 3rd Missouri on the north face and part of the stockade line, while three companies of the 1st and 4th Missouri in reserve were moved from point to point as required. Casualties in Herbert's Brigade were 21 killed and 39 wounded, total 60, not distributed between this redan and other points on the brigade line; Major Alexander Yates of the 36th Mississippi was killed. In Cockrell's Brigade, 28 were killed and 95 wounded, total 123, nearly all in this position; in the 3rd Missouri of that brigade, 12 were killed and 52 wounded, total 64. After May 25, the stockade and the redan's north face were held by the 27th Louisiana, and after June 2 the redan's east face was held by the left regiment of Green's Brigade. Two countermines against the Union approach from the redan's ditch were fired on the night of June 26, and another was prepared but not fired.
