Corporal Frank Woodruff Buckles, born February 1, 1901, and died February 27, 2011, was a Harrison County native and the last surviving American veteran of World War I. In his final years he came to represent the entire generation who fought and won “The Great War.” Famous for outliving his compatriots, he represents all Americans who served in WWI with honor but with little recognition. He was honorary chairman of the World War I Memorial Foundation, a recipient of France’s Legion of Honor, and was interred at Arlington National Cemetery. The men and women of Harrison County faithfully served in the United States Armed Forces; all gave some, some gave all, and all sacrificed time and youth and endured hardship, with many suffering wounds and illness and some giving their lives to protect this nation and its citizens and to preserve freedom.
