Harry S. Truman, born in 1884 and later the 33rd President of the United States, first came to Cameron while campaigning for Senate in 1934, speaking from a flatbed truck on Third Street. In 1940, he spoke before 5,000 people at the annual Cameron Catholic Picnic held at Korneman's Grove just south of town. His connection to Cameron centered on his good friend and hunting buddy Ted Sanders, who lived in a home near the site. Truman and Sanders met early in Truman's political career and remained lifelong friends. Sanders provided a holiday turkey to the Truman family every year for 47 years, until Mrs. Truman's passing in 1982.
