Shining Rock Wilderness is a protected area in North Carolina within Pisgah National Forest, managed by the United States Forest Service. Added to the National Wilderness Preservation System in 1964 with 13,400 acres, it has since expanded to 18,483 acres. NC 215 separates it from the Middle Prong Wilderness to the southwest. The Art Loeb Trail runs through the wilderness and leads to the base of Cold Mountain, with a spur trail to the summit. Cold Mountain later inspired Charles Frazier’s Civil War novel and its film adaptation. Since 2015, overnight campers have been required to carry bear-resistant canisters to reduce conflicts with black bears.
