When Stuart Roosa, a former Forest Service smoke jumper, served as an astronaut on the Apollo XIV mission, he took tree seeds along to honor the Forest Service. This tree grew from one of the 500 seeds that orbited the moon with him in 1971. The Forest Service planted it here as part of the 1976 Bicentennial celebration of the nation.
