Brown's Vineyard, established in 1874 at this site, was a popular resort during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Wine produced there from scuppernong grapes was marketed and sold across the United States, and the vineyard also provided entertainment before it was forced to close in 1920 due to Prohibition.
