Dr. Hugh Mercer was a physician and surgeon who practiced in the Conococheague settlement from 1750 to 1755 and lived in this locality during that time. A personal friend of Washington and a general in the Revolutionary Army, he received his death wounds at the Battle of Princeton in January 1777. He was a brave soldier, a skilled physician, and a loyal American.
