The Norwich and Worcester Railroad was leased to the Boston Hartford and Erie Railroad in 1869, to the New York and New England Railroad in 1886, to the New England Railroad in 1896, and to the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad in 1898. Centennial exercises were sponsored by the New London Railroad Association on May 11, 1940. The stone is a sill from the Norwich and Worcester Railroad freight house, built in 1839 and destroyed by the hurricane of Sept. 21, 1938.
