Coffin Mountain is a 5,770-foot peak in Oregon’s Willamette National Forest, part of a high ridge in the western Cascades near Bachelor Mountain and known for summit hikes with broad views over the Cascade Range. Its name comes from an elongated ridge near the summit whose shape was likened to a coffin. At the north end of that ridge stands Coffin Mountain Lookout, first built in 1905; the current structure dates to 1984, when a helicopter pad was added. In summer, the U.S. Forest Service uses the lookout to watch for wildfires, continuing its long forest-protection role, while seasonal wildflowers and beargrass add to the trail’s appeal.
