Breitenbush Hot Springs Retreat and Conference Center is a remote worker-owned cooperative in Oregon’s Cascades that grew from the historic Breitenbush Hot Springs resort site. After Alex Beamer acquired the flood-damaged property in 1977, community members restored and expanded its facilities, and by 1989 it had become a worker-owned cooperative. Fed by geothermal water that circulates underground for thousands of years, the springs anchor a retreat known for holistic, spiritual, countercultural, and recreational stays. Off-grid hydroelectric power, forest trails, and limited reception reinforce its seclusion. Its longer history includes early homesteading, a prominent resort era, environmental activism, and recovery after severe damage from the Santiam Fire in 2020.
