Breitenbush Hot Springs is a thermal mineral spring system along the Breitenbush River in Oregon’s Willamette National Forest, with lower springs on public land and upper springs tied to a private retreat center. Indigenous peoples including the Kalapuya, Wasco, and Molalla used the springs for centuries as places of medicinal and spiritual importance. Settlers began visiting in the 1840s, and the site took its enduring name in the 1870s. Commercial development expanded from the late 19th century into the 20th, but a flood in the 1970s destroyed both upper and lower facilities. Rebuilt upper springs now serve as a retreat, while the lower springs remain more primitive amid a geologically active volcanic setting.
