Hoodoo Butte is a broad cinder cone in the northern Oregon Cascades near Santiam Pass, notable for its intact summit crater and its place within the volcanically dense Sisters Reach of the High Cascades. Its uneven cone and east-open crater reflect irregular deposition around the vent, while nearby Hayrick Butte helped shield it from Pleistocene glacial erosion. Later ash deposits, shallow cindery soils, and repeated fires also shaped the mountain and its forests. Long valued for recreation, Hoodoo became the site of the Central Cascades' oldest ski area, begun in 1938 and later expanded, while the mountain also supports year-round outdoor use and wildlife habitat.
