J.B. White founded the small community of Rock Point in the early 1850's after receiving land in exchange for his service in the Rouge Indian Wars and developing a homestead on the north side of the stage road. The land was sold to L. J. White, who began construction of the Rock Point Hotel in 1864, and the hotel opened to the public on February 8, 1865, with a Grand Ball. At the hotel, L. J. established one of the first telegraph stations in the area, and stage company record books verify its regular use as a stage stop. By the turn of the century the hotel had closed, and Henry White, son of L. J., returned to farming. Today the building houses the Del Rio Winery tasting room.
