Owls Head Mountain, a 2,786-foot peak in the Adirondacks near Long Lake, overlooks lakes, wooded ridges, and the full length of Long Lake in the Raquette River system. It is most closely associated with its historic fire tower. After a 1908 forest fire destroyed nearby Long Lake West, the New York State Conservation Department built a wooden summit tower in 1911, then replaced it in 1919 with the present 35-foot Aermotor steel tower. The station operated until 1970, when airplane patrols replaced observers. Restored and reopened, the mountain now joins an accessible hike with a surviving reminder of the Adirondacks’ former fire-detection network.
