The William C. Whitney Wilderness Area is a protected tract in Adirondack Park at Long Lake, New York, within New York’s Forest Preserve. Named for William C. Whitney, it occupies part of the former Whitney Park estate, created after William Collins Whitney bought 68,000 acres in 1897. The landscape features broad waters, wetlands, low forested hills, and Antediluvian Mountain, its highest point. Little Tupper Lake and Lake Lila are its best-known interior lakes, among 12 bodies of water covering 4,286 acres. Known for quiet outdoor travel, especially canoeing, it also has foot trails and former logging roads used for cross-country skiing. In 1997, part of the long-private estate became public wilderness.
