At the mouth of the Ottawa and Maumee rivers on Lake Erie in Erie Township, Michigan, the North Maumee Bay Archeological District preserves about 130 acres of shoreline, wetlands, and islands with 20 recorded Late Woodland Native American sites. Gard Island and Indian Island hold some of the most important remains, though erosion and shifting shorelines have reduced or altered several sites, and others on the Woodtick Peninsula were lost before study. The area also lay within the Michigan-Ohio boundary dispute during the Toledo War of 1835 to 1836. Since 2006, much of it has also been protected within the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge.
