Toledo Harbor Light stands in Lake Erie near Toledo, Ohio, marking the entrance to Toledo Harbor about 8.4 miles from the mouth of the Maumee River. Built after the harbor channel was widened and deepened in 1897, it replaced the 1837 light on Turtle Island as growing shipping traffic required a new offshore beacon. Constructed on an artificial island begun in 1901, the station combined a three-story brick dwelling and cylindrical tower in a distinctive Romanesque design. First lit on May 23, 1904, it later was automated, preserved, and remains an active navigational aid, public attraction, and notable western Lake Erie landmark.
