The first covered bridge at this site was built in 1823 and was thought to be the first across the Rough River. After it decayed, it was replaced by another similar covered bridge. Earlier crossings here had been by ford or ferry. An iron bridge was constructed here in 1875 and was removed 23 years later to Barnett's Creek. The present bridge was opened to traffic in 1934.
