Dunkirk, Indiana, originally called Sutton Town and then Quincy, grew with the railroad and became a center of glassmaking whose success depended on the abundant crown of gas wells discovered during the gas boom era. Its history includes Main Street in the late 1800s, the Indiana Glass Company and its founding president Frank W. Merry, the first A&W root beer mug made by Indiana Glass, glass blower Charlie DeCamp working with the furnace that heated the glass, an array of glassware including the Ball Jar, and the labor union logo on a bottle representing employees at Ardagh Glass, the remaining glass manufacturer. Also central to the city’s story are Dunkirk High School’s Speedcat mascot, the Dunkirk High School building used from 1919 until 1975, the Cinderella Queen of Glass Crown, and the current day symbol of Dunkirk.
