The Prospect to Bucksport Ferry operated at this site from 1807 until 1931, when the Waldo/Hancock Bridge opened to public traffic. It served as an important transportation link between Waldo County and Hancock County, carrying passengers, livestock, vehicles, and goods from both sides of the Penobscot River. Over the years, the ferries were powered by hand sculling, wing power, and steam and gasoline engines. The site was owned by the State of Maine, and the ferries were owned and operated by several private owners, with Wendell Leach as the last.
