The National Capital Trolley Museum in Colesville, Maryland, preserves the history of electric streetcars and interurban railways in the Washington region through both exhibits and regularly operated historic trolleys on a one-mile demonstration line. Incorporated in 1961, the organization moved its Washington-focused collection to Colesville in the mid-1960s and began running streetcars there in 1969. Its holdings grew into the world’s largest collection of surviving Washington, D.C. streetcars, supported by archives and artifacts that show how streetcars shaped local communities and suburbs. Despite losses from vandalism, collisions, fire, and relocation, it continued operating, rebuilt its facilities, and remains an active preservation institution.
