During the hostile Indian years of 1866-71, this was the route of great cattle drives from Texas to U.S. forts in Colorado and New Mexico. Trailblazer Col. Charles Goodnight drove thousands of cattle to water here. The site later became Childress in 1886, and the cattle watering hole is now the lake in Fair Park.
