On June 10, 1933, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Pritchard and their family saw an automobile plunge into the Red River from their home on the west bluff and rescued its occupants, not recognizing them as Bonnie Parker, Clyde, and Buck Barrow. They sent for help, but when the local sheriff and police chief arrived, Bonnie Parker disarmed them. Buck Barrow shot Pritchard's daughter and crippled the family car to stop pursuit, and after kidnapping the officers, the gangsters fled. Bonnie and Clyde later met their deaths in 1934, and in this quiet region the episode became legend.
