Midway, named for its location halfway between Nashville and Franklin, was built in 1846 by Lysander McGavock to replace an earlier home destroyed by fire after he married Elizabeth Crockett, daughter of the original owner of the land. The site had once been home to pre-historic Indians, and during the Civil War the house served as headquarters for generals from both sides while its grounds were the scene of several skirmishes. Water from its spring was piped to the construction site when the railroad cut was dug in Brentwood, and the house is today home of the Brentwood Country Club.
