Near this spring, Somerset was established as the county seat in 1801 on forty acres given by William Dodson. The path to the spring became the town's most traveled street as people came to drink from the Old Town Spring. A popular saying held that whoever drank from the Old Town Spring would have wisdom and would always return to Somerset.
