Near this location on August 17, 1905, a masked desperado described as "nine feet high and armed with a small canon" stopped the Half Moon Bay Stagecoach. He angrily demanded that driver Ed Campbell throw down the Wells Fargo Co.'s treasure box, Levy Bros. strongbox, and the U.S. Mail bag. There were no valuables, but five passengers hid their gold and surrendered only $4.30. A poem celebrated the episode as the return of old-time romance before ending with the complaint that the robber had taken thirty cents from the poet.
