Mount Spokane Ski and Snowboard Park, in Mount Spokane State Park northeast of Spokane, developed over decades from an early west-side ski area with rope tows into a major regional destination on the mountain’s east-facing slopes. In 1947 it ran what was called the world’s first double chairlift, adapted from a mine tramway. A fatal lodge fire in January 1952 helped drive the move east, where a new day lodge and expanding lifts shaped the modern resort. The mountain also holds broader history through the 1933 Vista House, the 1937 Northwest ski championships won in women’s slalom by Gretchen Fraser, and the efforts of local backers and later operators.
