Shuteye Peak, on Chiquito Ridge in California’s Sierra Nevada, is known for broad views, an active lookout, and deep ties to Native American seasonal travel. Its summit became a milestone in fire detection when the U.S. Forest Service established Shuteye Lookout in 1907 as the Sierra Nevada’s first permanent fire lookout, later linked by telephone to ranger stations and the San Joaquin Valley. The peak remains part of active fire detection and preserves memorials to early Forest Service pioneers. Its surroundings also reflect major logging history, rare high-elevation habitat for the endangered Shuteye Peak fawn lily, and the once-noted range of the grizzly bear called Two Toes.
