The Washburn Fire was a human-caused wildfire that began on July 7, 2022, near the Washburn Trail in Yosemite National Park’s lower Mariposa Grove and quickly drew national attention because it threatened the grove’s giant sequoias and historic features. About 450 visitors were evacuated, and crews used retardant drops, hose lines, fire-resistant wrapping, and sprinklers to protect vulnerable trees including the Grizzly Giant, as well as the historic Galen Clark cabin. The fire also closed the Mariposa Grove and Yosemite’s South Entrance, prompted evacuation of Wawona, spread into Sierra National Forest, and was contained on August 1 after burning 4,886 acres.
