Fresno Dome is an isolated granite dome in California’s Sierra National Forest that rises prominently above the woods around Soquel Meadow. The Mono people knew it as wah-me-yelo, “the greeting place.” In the 1870s, John Muir reached the dome, recorded its name as “Wamello,” and used its summit to help locate Fresno Grove, now called Nelder Grove. Its importance rests in the meeting of natural form, Indigenous place-naming, and Sierra exploration history. The dome is also a recreational site, with a remote campground below and technical climbing routes on the rock, while its solitary profile makes it especially striking in the surrounding forest.
