Whitman National Forest in northeastern Oregon was established on July 1, 1908, from part of the Blue Mountains National Forest and began with 1,234,020 acres. It expanded on June 20, 1920, with the addition of part of Minam National Forest. In 1954, it was administratively combined with Wallowa National Forest to create the Wallowa–Whitman National Forest, though Whitman remained the larger historical unit. As of September 30, 2008, it encompassed 1,266,902 acres, or 55.96 percent of the combined forest, and stretched across parts of Baker, Union, Grant, Wallowa, Umatilla, and Malheur counties.
