Bountiful Tabernacle was one of the oldest L.D.S. chapels and was considered the finest at the time of its erection. Augustus Farnham was the architect. The site was dedicated on February 11, 1857 by Elder Lorenzo Snow. Grain was stored in its stone foundation when Johnston's army advanced. Its walls are of adobe, and its roof timbers were fastened with wooden pegs. Lumber came from Meeting House Hollow and Holbrook Canyon. The tower had five spires, and the center spire served as a sun dial. It was dedicated on March 14, 1863 by Elder Heber C. Kimball, with President Brigham Young presiding. The cost was $60,000. Bishop John Stoker and councilors Wm. Atkinson and Wm. H. Lee were associated with the work.
