Huntington Ravine is a glacial cirque on Mount Washington in New Hampshire’s White Mountains, distinguished by the mountain’s steepest and highest headwall and an especially severe alpine character. Named for Joshua H. Huntington, an assistant in New Hampshire’s geological survey, it is a major destination for hikers and climbers. The Huntington Ravine Trail is the only hiking route through the ravine, crossing boulders and talus before climbing steeply up the headwall, often not passable until late May or early June. The ravine is best known for demanding rock and ice climbing, but its exposure also brings grave hazards, including avalanches, icefalls, and hypothermia.
