Ram Island Light stands just offshore from Ram Island on the east side of Boothbay Harbor, marking the harbor’s eastern entrance and the western side of the Damariscotta River’s mouth. Established in 1883 as Boothbay Harbor grew into a major commercial and shipbuilding center with rising tourist and steamer traffic, it guided vessels through a busy stretch of Mid Coast Maine. Automated in 1965, the lighthouse features an ashlar granite base, a brick tower, and a polygonal lantern house encircled by an iron walkway. Its surviving station buildings were recognized in 1988 for their importance to Boothbay Harbor’s maritime history.
