Hendricks Head Light stands in Southport, Maine, on the western shore of the island at the mouth of the Sheepscot River, a waterway that once led to the important shipbuilding and port center of Wiscasset. Established in 1829, the station first used an unusual design with the keeper’s house supporting the lantern. The present light tower and keeper’s house were built in 1875, reusing the earlier foundation, and the station also includes a fog bell tower, shed, and oil house. Deactivated in 1933 and relit in 1951, the light now shines continuously, with white shown westward and red eastward.
