Robbers Roost is a remote canyon hideout in southeastern Utah centered on Robbers Roost Canyon, a tributary of the Dirty Devil River. In the closing years of the Old West, it became closely linked to Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch, who used its rugged, defensible landscape as a refuge after robberies. Accounts hold that Butch Cassidy and Elzy Lay first formed the Wild Bunch there, aided by local support such as horses and beef from Ann and Josie Bassett’s ranch. The gang adapted the site for extended stays, and its secrecy was so effective that pursuing lawmen never found it. The area later became part of Cassidy legend and remains known for its isolation and recreation opportunities.
