The spring was used by the John Dooly family, whose simple log cabin stood across the road opposite it. Colonel John Dooly lived there with his family, and it was there that he was murdered by a band of Tories. During the Revolutionary War, Dooly fought with General Elijah Clark, and Dooly County was named for him.
