In 1872, Frank Collinson, an English born adventurer, came to Texas to be a cowboy. After a few years of trailing the big cattle herds north, he turned his attention to the burgeoning Buffalo hide trade that was taking root at Texas towns such as Rath City, Fort Griffin and Mobeetie. From 1875 to 1878, Collinson steadily worked the ranges of the Texas Panhandle and the rolling plains below the Llano Estacado. During the height of the great hunt, Collinson armed with a Sharps .45 caliber rifle, downed 121 Buffalo with a little over 300 shots on a single stand approximately one mile north of this site, a feat that was never duplicated on the Texas Bison Range.
