Rendezvous Mountain State Park in Purlear, North Carolina, spans 1,800 acres on a landscape tied to both local Revolutionary War tradition and later conservation history. The mountain is popularly associated with the Overmountain Men through the story that Colonel Benjamin Cleveland used an ox horn on the summit to gather more than 200 Patriots from Wilkes County before marching to the Battle of Kings Mountain. First acquired by the state in 1926, the site was long considered too small, remote, and historically uncertain to open as a park. After decades as Rendezvous Mountain Educational State Forest, it returned to the state park system in 2022, retaining roads, trails, and a surviving Civilian Conservation Corps cabin.
