Beekeeping has been a human craft for centuries. An apiary is a space with two or more hives in the same place. Honeybees average up to 50,000 bees per hive. A single hive consists of one queen, who is more like a mother than a queen because she lays up to 2,000 eggs per day, worker bees, all female, who do all the work in and out of the hive, and drones, all male, who make up about 10% of a hive. Drones mate with a queen during her one and only maiden voyage. Honeybees pollinate at least one third of the food crop when gathering pollen and nectar from plants, flowers, and trees. In recent decades there has been a tremendous loss of honeybees due to a variety of factors.
