Brasstown Bald, known to the Cherokee as Enotah, is Georgia’s highest point at 4,784 feet, rising in the Blue Ridge Mountains on the Towns-Union county line within Chattahoochee National Forest. Its English name grew from a translation error that confused a Cherokee word for a fresh green place with one meaning brass. Cherokee tradition also links the summit to a flood story. As a southern Appalachian bald, it offers broad views that can reach Atlanta on clear days. Long valued for scenery and steep climbs, it has also drawn attention for Tour de Georgia finishes, Thomas S. Candler’s visitor-promotion efforts, and the rare isopod Ligidium enotahensis.
