Brasstown Wilderness is a protected area in northern Georgia within the Chattahoochee National Forest. Established in 1986 and managed by the United States Forest Service as part of the National Wilderness Preservation System, it encompasses 12,896 acres on the northern, northeastern, and southwestern slopes of Brasstown Bald. That mountain’s 4,784-foot summit is the highest point in Georgia. The wilderness also contains 14.1 miles of trout streams and supports abundant wildlife, including threatened or endangered species such as the pygmy shrew. It remains significant as both a preserved mountain habitat and the landscape surrounding one of Georgia’s most notable natural landmarks.
