Mount Elden, known in Hopi as Hovi'itstuyqa, is an extinct lava dome northeast of Flagstaff in northern Arizona and one of the city's most prominent landmarks. Rising nearly 2,400 feet above the surrounding terrain to 9,301 feet, it is part of the San Francisco volcanic field and was formed mainly by thick dacitic lava from several vents in a non-explosive eruption. Its unusual uplifted sedimentary blocks reflect shallow magma intrusion. Named for early settler John Elden, who homesteaded nearby in 1877, the mountain later became a popular recreation area. A 1977 wildfire burned much of its southern slopes, and it is now considered dormant.
