During the summer of 1947, the Arizona Highway Department constructed a 6.5-mile cut-off alignment of Route 66 through Flagstaff. This re-alignment shifted Route 66 away from the older Camp Townsend-Winona Road/U.S. Highway 89 alignment that brought the highway to Flagstaff from just north and east of here. East- and west-bound traffic used this piece of Route 66 until it was bypassed in 1967 by the construction of I-40 south of Flagstaff. The 170-foot remnant was paved with reinforced concrete up to 10 inches thick. Each lane is 12 feet wide and has expansion joints at approximately every 12 feet and between lanes to control cracking. The City of Flagstaff has preserved and incorporated this piece of Route 66 into the Flagstaff Urban Trails System and developed this rest area as a reminder of this legendary road and its contribution to Flagstaff.
