Samuel Woodfill was hailed as an "Outstanding soldier of the AEF" by Gen. Pershing and as "The first soldier of America" by Marshal Foch. He received the Congressional Medal of Honor, the French Croix de Guerre, and the Legion of Honor. At Cunel, France, on Oct. 12, 1918, alone he destroyed three machine gun nests, killing 19 foe. Born in Indiana in 1883, he became a Campbell County, Kentucky, farmer, later served as a major in World War II, and was interred in Arlington Cemetery in 1951.
