This area was an important passageway for Union and Confederate forces. United States Army forces moved along Poor Fork and Confederate States Army forces along Clover Fork of the Cumberland River, and each route reflected local sentiment. In February 1862, United States Army forces under Brigadier General T. T. Garrard, grandson of Kentucky's second governor, camped here. Later, Confederate States Army troops under General H. Marshall also camped here.
