Black Mountain Off-Road Adventure Area
Nature
Black Mountain Off-Road Adventure Area in Harlan County, Kentucky, is a 7,000-acre off-highway vehicle trail network built around the rugged slopes of Black Mountain. With about 150 miles of trails shaped in part by earlier mining and logging routes, it offers steep climbs, descents, and large elevation changes. The system attracts an estimated 20,000 to 30,000 visitors annually from across the eastern United States and Canada, making it a major motor recreation destination. Managed by HCORBA and accessed mainly through the Evarts and Putney trailheads, it has operated under a permit system since 2009 and has gained wider recognition through television and magazine coverage.
