Absalom (Albert) Hazlett, born and raised near here, was a staunch abolitionist who became a lieutenant in John Brown’s provisional army and took part in the 1859 raid on Harper’s Ferry Arsenal. After the attack failed, he was captured, tried, convicted, and hanged for his involvement. The incident, intended to arm slaves to fight for their own freedom, became a major catalyst for the outbreak of the Civil War.
