Mount Airy Forest in Cincinnati, Ohio, established in 1911, became the city’s largest park and one of the nation’s earliest urban reforestation efforts. Once forested, the land was heavily cleared for 19th-century agriculture, and poor farming and grazing left it badly eroded and barren. The city gradually restored it as a public forest and park through an ambitious municipal reforestation campaign. In the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps added many rustic features, including trails, bridges, walls, gardens, and bridle paths that still survive and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today the forest combines historic restoration, varied habitats, and public recreation.
